The San Mateo Chapter of Surfrider Foundation is a grassroots volunteer organization. There are many different ways to get involved and a variety of roles to choose from to fit your interests and skills.

Below are some of the current volunteer opportunities and areas that we need help. If you are interested in volunteering for any of these or other areas not listed here, please contact our Vice Chair, Kari Mueller, vicechair@smc.surfrider.org. Our chapter is only as strong as its volunteer base. We need you!!

Volunteers Currently Needed

Volunteer Coordinator (1) – The Volunteer Coordinator is one of the most important jobs in the Chapter, providing the critical recruitment support that keeps the chapter running. This role is responsible for managing our volunteers, consulting with program coordinators to determine volunteer needs, and recruiting new volunteers to the chapter.

Event Coordinator (1) – The Events Coordinator is a person who likes to have a lot of fun and throw tons of cool parties! Our Chapter is an entirely volunteer-based organization and without some serious merrymaking we’d have a much harder time sticking to our agendas.

Secretary (1) – The Secretary is the glue that supports our executive team. This role includes attending and taking notes at chapter meetings and keeping us organized and on track. Ideally the person in this role must be able to commit 1-5 hours a week of work on behalf of the chapter and remain in the position for a 2-year commitment.

Coastal Protection & Policy Coordinator (1) – This volunteer leadership position will identify, educate, and lead the team and the chapter’s members in the advancement of new developments, and support of ongoing initiatives such as coastal ecosystem conservation, restoration, and sustainability.

Coastal Education Coordinator (1) – This is a volunteer leadership position managing our coastal classrooms program.

Blue Water Task Force Coordinator (1) – This is a volunteer leadership position managing the Blue Water Task Force schedule, volunteer training, and results reporting.

Beach Cleanup Committee Leaders (multiple) – This is a volunteer position. This role will work with the Beach Cleanup Coordinator, Communications, and Volunteer Coordinator in identifying locations, planning, and leading a cleanup.
